Training Goals and Objectives

 

The goal of the training program is to prepare the sworn law enforcement officer, mental health officer, emergency medical responder, social worker, and hospital personnel to understand and identify the behavior, techniques, and proper/lawful procedures in handling persons in mental health crisis.  This training will also provide techniques in communication to de-escalate persons involved in difficult and dangerous situations.

 

Training Audience, Format, and Content

 

This course is intended for various levels of experienced sworn law enforcement officer, mental health officer, emergency medical responder, social worker, and hospital personnel.  Students will learn recognition techniques of various mental health crises, develop communication skills in dealing with difficult situations enabling the ability to safely de-escalate the crisis, and obtain a working understanding of the laws pertaining to persons suffering from mental health, detailing the lawful actions to be taken.

 

This course is most successful when taught and received with audiences of 40 attendees or fewer.

 

This is a customized to your states mental health laws and is a 3 day course. The course is designed to be conducted from 0800 to 1600 hours daily.

 

Complete General Course

 

* History of Mental Health

* Problem identification

* Officer Safety in crisis situations

* Identification of Mental Health Characteristics

* Familiarization and side effects of Psychotropic medications

* Family involvement and crisis needs

* Strategies in dealing with persons in crisis

* Communication and negotiation techniques

* State laws pertaining to the emergency detention for mental health and chemical dependencies

* Assessment of danger and recognition of high and low risk situations

* Office Safety issues

 

Daily content and course schedule: Module: (daily content will be modified, per development of course around agency policies and state laws)

 

Day One:

 

  • Overview

  • Mental Illness History and Characteristics

  • Background of training and necessity

  • Aspects of problems

  • Officer Safety

  • Levels of intervention

  • Myths

  • Definitions

  • Characteristics of Mental Illness

  • Multiple diagnosis

  • Basic facts about Mental Illness and Mental Retardation – distinguishing between each

 

Day Two:

 

  • Psychotropic Medications and side effects

  • Dynamics of behavior

  • Psychosis facts and symptoms

  • Family and witness feelings and crisis in dealing

  • Resources available

  • Methods in handling the acute Mentally Ill person

  • Strategies in dealing

  • Active listening and verbal communication techniques

 

Day Three:

 

  • Mental Health Officers

  • State Laws for emergency detentions

  • Warrant less apprehensions

  • Ways to commit

  • Rights and liabilities

  • Non-verbal communication identification and techniques

  • Assessment of danger and levels

  • Interventions in high and low risk situations

  • Developmental Disabilities and the identification

 

 

Student Pre–requisites: Sworn Law Enforcement

 

Maximum Enrollment: 40

 

Student Evaluation: The evaluation process will consist of classroom participation, active involvement in identifications and de-escalation role play, and participation in practical exercises.

Audio/visual to include power point projector

 

Student Materials

 

Student materials will involve copies of the handouts.

 

A wide range of digital video and power point presentations will be used in the training session, and the instructor will come prepared with everything she will need to make this an informative, fast-paced learning experience.
