Crime Scene Management for Patrol Officers

 

This course is designed to enhance the abilities of the new or experienced Road Patrol Officer in approaching, observing and protecting the Crime Scene and evidence.

 

Training Goals and Objectives

 

The goal of this program is to acquaint the Road Patrol Officer with Crime Scene Procedures and techniques used to preserve the Crime Scene and the value of evidence located within and around the scene.  Officers will be familiarized with the importance of their role in scene assessment and possible suspect identification.

Training Audience, Format and Content

 

            This course is intended for all Law Enforcement personnel to include new or experienced Road Patrol Officers as well as Detectives and supervisors.

This course will advise of approach techniques, observations, evidence identification / location, scene security and scene access.  The theory of evidence transference will be discussed at length.

 

This course is intended for Road Patrol Officers but is an excellent refresher course for Detectives and Ranking Officials.  This course is most successful with smaller groups but may be given to larger groups.  Some hands on exercises and role playing assist to bring the course into the realm of every day Police work.

Daily content and course schedule / agenda

 

Day one:

Morning Session

  • Scene approach

  • Special Unit Notification

  • Scene control

  • How big is big enough?

  • Secure Areas

  • Marking off the scene perimeter.

 

Afternoon Session     

  • Scene access, logs, family and press areas

  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment.

  • Exposure Incidents and  treatment

  • Report Writing and scene alterations

 

There are no pre-requisites to this course.

Evaluation:  The evaluation process will consists of class participation and some role Playing scenarios. 

 

Cost:  One-day course (8 hours)

 

Limitations / Special Needs:  None

Any audio/visual or POSTC/Academy facility or staff needs will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, but might include the use of electronic projection unit, audio or marker board materials.

Student Materials

Student materials will include a handout “Crime Scene Management for Patrol Officers.” A wide range of digital video and Power Point presentations will be used in the training session and the instructor will come prepared with everything he will need to make this an informative, fast-paced learning experience.

Detailed lesson plans are available as needed, but copies of the Power Point presentations and   digital videos cannot be supplied with this document.
